HP Envy 15-bq051sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I have had my hp Envy X360 laptop for months now (Envy x360 bq051sa, AMD A12 quad core A12-9720p cpu with Radeon R7 graphics, 1TB hdd and 128GB ssd, 8GB  DDR4 RAM) and have noticed that it will ocasionally restart without warning, around once or twice a week. I can't remember running any intensive and demanding programs when this has happened. I think it may be a hardware issue related to an unknown device in device manager, under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'. It is listed with the title 'Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Failed)' I was thinking it may be my headphones as I use them often, but am not convinced as there has been one or two restarts where they weren't plugged in. It is vital that I eventually find a solution to this as this is my first HP laptop and, aside from this, is a great device; I would hate for my experience with HP to be damaged by this very irritating problem that has caused me to lose some very important documents of which such losses have seriously hindered my work as a freelance graphic designer and caused me to lose a client. I would appreciate, with undescribable greatness, anyone's solution to this problem 🙂

When I wake up my computer from sleep and am logging in, the sound that would usually alert me that I have just plugged something into one of the USB port will play, quickly followed by the sound that means I've pulled it out, despite nothing being plugged into my laptop. Also a pop-up notification says 'The last USB device I plugged in could not be recognised' (I don't often plug things into my computer but the last time I did, it was an Xbox controller and it worked fine and appeared in device manager under 'Xbox Peripherals'. Another past thing was a Lego EV3 Brick) I have looked into many forums and websites about it but I haven't yet found a solution that addresses my exact issue or, under a similar issue, that has resolved it; I have tried changing the settings in Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Start-up and Recovery> System failure and unchecking the 'Automatically restart' but to no success.  If I try uninstalling the driver then scanning for hardware changes, it again still shows Unknown USB device... with a yellow exclamation mark and I can't update the driver. The Roll Back Driver button is also greyed out.

Regarding the restarts, I have also looked in Control Panel>Security and Maintenance>Maintence>Report Problems, View Reliability history and saw that on all of the days that my computer unexpectedly restarted, there were three critical events: 'Windows was not properly shut down', 'Windows stopped working' and 'Shut down unexpectedly'. When I viewed 'Shut down unexpectedly's info on all of the random restarts, it said:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

Code: 124 (This seems to mean a hardware error, from my research)

Parameter 1: 0

Parameter 2: ffffa5800c46b8f8

Also, the first log ever in this 'reliabilty and problem history' page, there was this set of 3 events as I said above, but also a 'Hardware  error' which I have never seen since or before anywhere:

Status: Not reported

Also, in device manager, once I click on 'Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)' I find it's properties box with lots of info, some of which is:

Device Type: Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)

Location:Port_#0002.Hub#0003

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Additionally, this may be related, I have also had a problem that autorotate in tablet mode doesn't work sometimes despite all settings allowing it, and also in Device Manager the sensor collection v2 being sometimes present and sometimes not, in the list...

I hope you will take up this challenge and, if you do, I cannot imagine how I could thank you. If you would like any more information regarding this issue, do not hessistate to request it. Thanks 🙂
