HP 650 G3 Notebook Product ID: D3H19UT#ABA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP 650 G3 Notebook Product ID: D3H19UT#ABA, with Intel i3-2328M Socket PGA988 CPU. I would like to upgrade to a faster CPU.  I found that I have the Intel HM75 Chipset and based on research online, the HM75 Chipset can support i5 and i7 CPU's however I only found the i5-3230M is compatible with HM75 and having the same PGA988 socket style.  However when I look on the HP website, for user manuals, I found that the HP 650 G3 Notebook is listed as coming with either i3 or i5 or Pentium/Celeron CPU's, and among those listed in the manual at time of publication 2011/2012 - they only mention the i5-3210M CPU was an option.  However I find that the i5-3210M is specified as using a socket PGA988B vs PGA988. So I am having doubts regarding fitment and compatibility.  The other question is whether or not my BIOS supports any PGA988 i5 or only the ones mentioned compatible with HM75 chipset.

If anyone knows, I would like the faster CPU I can run.  My TDP on the stock board/cpu is 35W and the i5-3230 and i5-3210M CPU's are both TDP=35Watts which is a good sign.  I prefer to run the 3230M as its slightly faster on the bench marks for the same price on ebay.

Please anyone who has upgraded CPU on an HP 650 G3 Notebook, please respond and let me know what works with these.  I am also considering the i7 CPUs that are supported by HM75 chipsets.  ANYBODY upgrade to an i7 CPU with the HP650 Notebooks?

Please advise.

Thanks

@DaveD3

Please use the following manual (page 1):

They are NON replaceable CPU's. Other manual

Looks like your machine is an older generation. Are you sure your machine is a G3 ? Even G1 has better CPU's

MY LAPTOP IS A HP PAVILION 650 NOTEBOOK G3

NOTE: (I DO NOT HAVE THE 650 PROBOOK!)

YOU PROVIDED DOCUMENTATION FOR THE PROBOOK650, THAT IS A DIFFERENT MODEL OF COMPUTER... PLEASE RESPOND WITH THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT REFERENCES.  I HAVE BEEN THROUGH ALL THE DOCUMENTATION ON THE HP SITE FOR MY MODEL,  THE WARRANTY SEARCH TOOL ALSO PROVIDES DIRECT LINKS FOR THE MANUALS AND SPECIFICATIONS...

HOPING THAT SOMEONE MORE EXPERIENCED WITH THESE MIGHT HAVE A BETTER ANSWER???

Restating my question here:

I have an HP 650 Notebook PC, (this is the pavilion notebook model - NOT the probook 650)

My notebook is currently running an i3-2328M CPU (socket PGA988)(HM75 Chipset).

HP Factory service manual and specifications at HP.com list i5-3210M CPU besides the i3 CPU options (in 2011/2012) however I after some research online and i found the HM75 chipset supports an i7-3520M and the i73520M has the same (socket FCPGA988) as the i5-3210M/3230M and i3-2328M.

I am hoping the i7 will work on my PC because its roughly double the performance. HOWEVER DUE TO my lack of experience and expertise, on the subject, I am worried that it may still not work on my motherboard for an odd reason.

i have been told by some people that HP is notorious for having cpu upgrade limitations built into the motherboard or BIOS code to force customers to upgrade to a more expensive model of computer.  I don't know if this is true, but its plausible.  I have seen PC's where i.e. DELL said max ram in  16GB but the computer could run 32GB with no issues.  Despite all the factory documentation saying it not capable of it.  I think the BIOS could inspect a data register in the CPU's on bootup to see if its in a pre-enumerated list of approved CPU-ID#'s programmed into the BIOS chip.  But then who knows?  Thats why I contacted HP support 3 days ago but so far have not heard back from them.

Often times people happen to have an extra CPU around and they attempt running it and they would know if upgrading the hp 650 notebook to an i7 CPU is possible.  They would have just tried it and found out. I am hoping that one of those persons would see my question and respond.  I think other hardward forums are more popular than HP support pages.  I think the factory support pages offer the lowest grade of help with these things but I posted anyhow just to see if anyone responds.

so bottom line is  WOULD ANYBODY KNOW if the i7-3520M CPU will work on my HP 650 Notebook???

HERE are links to the specs and manuals for my model, including my model and serial#
