HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-c0000 (2W0H9AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My new laptop's touchpad is horrible. It seems like due to the size of it, just moving my thumb while typing moves the cursor, and will highlight what i am typing, or move the cursor (or both), often change what I am typing, highlight everything, and i have to keep adjusting everything. Sentences also tend to get deleted, and whole paragraphs.  Nobody needs a touchpad that is half the size of their laptop. I am starting to realize why somebody i know locked their touchpad. I had been using an external mouse sometimes, but sometimes i prefer the touchpad. This is really annoying, as sometimes i am typing comments on a website, and the whole comment gets deleted. I also cannot paste it back there, and perhaps i forget the command to undo it, or it is unavailable.

Hi@JoshuaCaleb,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing touchpad issues with the HP Laptop.

I have a few recommendations

  • Update your Notebook computer to the latest BIOS from HP.COM.
  • Make sure the Windows and HP support assistant updates are up to date.
  • Click on windows and X keys together in settings->Devices->Mouse and Touchpad->Additional Mouse option-> Enable touchpad. Reboot your HP laptop, start it again and check whether your laptop touchpad problem has been fixed.
  • Click on this link for further settings. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03882926

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

It isn’t that it doesn’t work, but that it is super-sensitive I think. I don’t think updating the BIOS will make it stop moving the cursor when my thumb rests on it, or make it stop highlighting, etc. what do you think? It is so big on this model, that I will be typing and set my thumb down and the cursor moves and where I’m typing moves, and also everything will get highlighted sometimes then deleted. It seems like the touchpad is 3x4 but I’m not sure at the moment. I would like to avoid this trouble without disabling the touchpad or  having all my fingers and thumbs vertical all of the time. By the way, I hope somebody has a solution to my question regarding hp assistant on my other post.

Hi@JoshuaCaleb,

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.

There could be multiple reasons why everything is getting selected when you click, like:

  1. Corrupted or outdated mouse/touchpad driver.
  2. Faulty mouse or laptop touchpad.

Check if the issue persists try the following fixes.

  1. Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.
  2. Scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  3. Update your mouse driver.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall your mouse driver.
  5. Check if ClickLock is turned on.
  6. Turn off the Sticky Keys.
  7. Run SFC and DISM scans.
  8. Restore the previous version of Windows.

if any of these, it would be upgraded version of windows. i was told that i could not get support for windows if i didn't upgrade to the latest version of windows 10. there wouldn't be a virus, and the system wouldn't be corrupt. by the way, safety scanner has had a trojan every time i try to download it, microsoft keeps telling me thanks for letting them know.

by the way, i keep trying to ask on my thread why i cannot sign in to connect to the internet for hp support assistant. i think that this also happened with windows updates or the upgrade. any idea? i have a different thread for that. it is annoying if the real reason i keep having the touchpad select everything and be so sensitive is due to the windows 10 upgrade. but if that isn't the reason, it would be simply due to the size, and because it is over sensitive. i was using a mouse prior.
