I have an HP EliteBook 8460p which displays the "general system board failure" blink code (sequence of five blinks, repeated three times) on boot, though after the code has displayed the system boots as normal.

To remedy this I replaced the mainboard with a spare from another computer which I know works, however after swapping it in and booting the computer I still have the same issue. I also tried replacing the ExpressCard reader with another spare, but that doesn't help either.

Are there any specific components that may trigger this error code when they fail, or should I just try replacing everything in the top case?

Things I've tried:

  • Clearing the CMOS (both original and replacement board)
  • Resetting the TPM (both original and replacement board)
  • Replacing the mainboard
  • Replacing the ExpressCard reader

Thankful for any advice.
