We own five HP Zbook 17 G3 laptops, with (extra) Nvidia Quadro M2000M graphics card, we'd like to use them for VR with 'Vive HTC'...but... They ('Vive') advice to use at least GeForce GTX 1060 or higher graphics cards, that's why I'd like to change the current Nvida M2000M graphics card.
The 'Steam' performance tests @ https://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/SteamVR_Performance_Test/?l=dutch also shows/indicates that the M2000M isn't really suitable.
BUT I can't seem to order the 'mobile' versions of the GeForce GTX graphics cards, only the desktop? Is there someway somehow a solution other then buy a (or 5) new laptop(s)? 😜
=> Hopefully it's perhaps possible true HP? Or can't it be done at all?
With kind regards,
Tim

I have the 15 inch version of the same laptop and I did an upgrade to the M2000M MXM video card on mine. HP does not offer a GeForce video card on these machines; they are designed for CAD and video production work and the Quadro cards are optimized for those types of work. The GeForce cards are optimized for gaming. And MXM video cards are not universally interchangeable.
Here is a GTX 1060 MXM card; insanely expensive:

1070:

And here is the HP M2000M:
You can see the form factor on the GeForce cards is a bit different; they are longer and likely will not fit.
There are several good MXM enthusiast sites out there and you can check and see if anyone has tried the upgrade you ask about. I believe your laptop has a Thunderbolt 3 port; mine does and you may need to consider an eGPU.
Post back with any more questions.

Hello mister Huffer,
I've just found your reply and i have a follow up question.
do you mean to say that the GTX cards NEVER work with the HP ZBOOK 17 G3?
I have bought a GTX 970m and wanted to see if it works. the card drivers are downloaded and working but i got an issue after installing the drivers, the problem is that the laptop is becoming none responsive after logging into windows, windows freezes and the fans spin loudly.
ALT + CTRL + Delete don't respond and i have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.
until the time of writing this, I haven't found a solution.
Please do comment if you have feedback on this issue or have heard of a solution.
Kind regards
