Yes @kusak I think you have the gist of it. So in this case the OP should be advised to put in a 2.5 inch SATA SSD. It will be the easiest and least expensive option.

Let's maybe give some advice that is less confusing and general and talk specifics about your laptop. Service Manual here:
Your laptop has no M.2 slot on the motherboard. It has a 2.5 inch hard drive/SSD bay. The only way (see p. 66) to use an M.2 SSD is to get an adapter sled that lets you use a SATA type M.2 SSD in place of the hard drive. That is an expense you really do not need to incur as a 2.5 inch SATA SSD will be just as fast as an M.2 placed in one of these adapter sleds.
