17-bs077ng

I wanted to reset a HP 17-bs077ng to factory default to gift it to some distant relative with very little money.

Unfortunately, the restoration process always stopped with the message "restoration icomplete" (translated from German). I couldn't boot into windows and only got back to that screen.

After several retries with the restoration I tried to do a cloud recovery from my desktop PC, which worked for my 255 G6 4 years ago. Unfortunately, the product ID was labeled "invalid".

I gave up an installed Win11 from a USB-stick, hoping I could do cloud recovery from the laptop itself after that. Sadly, although the app read the product ID correctly, it was labeled invalid there to.

Although the restoration partition is still there, there seems to be no way to start the process again, since the app seems to be gone not only in Windows but in UEFI, too, and there seems to be no way of reinstalling it, since I can only download an update for the app from the laptops support-page. I have installed all the drivers I could find there and a few more recent updates from elsewhere.

So, even though this laptop had a dedicated recovery partition, it bricked itself while doing that recovery, and since HP stopped supporting old laptops ind cloud recovery, there is no way to get it back to factory defaults?

HP withdraws support for the Cloud recovery tool on consumer class PC's upon the PC reaching 5 years of age.

You will have to clean install W10 on the PC and then download the drivers and software from the support page.

Did so already, just used Win11 instead. Still, a shame it didn't work like it was supposed to do.
