I had posted in 2021 about a 17by1053dx flakey internal DVD-ROM that sometimes needed "polling" (needed to be accessed by clicking its file explorer icon) to show the contents of a DVD-ROM.in the usual autoplay pop-up file explorer window..
Disks read/write/play fine once the disk is open and contents recognized. It's as if the "new disk inserted" status gets missed by file explorer until file explorer gets a "nudge.".
I recently upgraded this near-unused machine to Win 11. It exhibits the same issue, which I have tested more.
Turns out when a CD or DVD is first inserted, the problem shows itself. Subsequent CD/DVD insertions (of any CD or DVD) pop up disk contents fine. The problem will NOT recur until the drive is closed while empty. On re-opening and inserting a disk, the problem recurs.
Even the dismgmt.msc console will not recognize a disk has been inserted when this happens, until the drive is polled by clicking its blank icon in file explorer. Then, its contents pop up and diskmgmt.msc simultaneously updates to show a loaded drive.
I also now discover that the SD card reader exhibits similar behavior on first insertion of cards.....
I did every check possible as shown in many posts about DVD Drive problems. registry checks, safe mode, software removals, created new account, tried another internal drive, run full diagnostics, updated all drivers, updated BIOS (to F.72), etc etc etc etc . Boilerplate "solutions' do nothing.
Trying again to find out if anyone else has experienced this with a 17" HP laptop.
====================================
I had posted this in 2021 and never got an answer that corrected the problem:
I have a 17by1053dx, three months out of warranty. It's barely been used, probably only has about 48 hours on it total.
After an upgrade to latest version of Win 10 20H2 the DVD drive has become a little flaky.
Its icon shows in file explorer and disk manager, but if I load a CD or DVD, many times it's not recognized and its contents don't pop up (as is set for that device). The disc spins up, but the icon remains a generic icon for a DVD drive.
If I refresh file explorer (the window that opens when you double click "My PC"), or if I double click the drive icon there, the icon changes to show a loaded disc and its title and contents then display. No problems with reading the disc.
This behavior is intermittent. I swapped in a second identical DVD drive, and the same behavior exists. I did a complete repair reinstall of Windows 10, and the problem is the same.
It's like Windows is sometimes having difficulty recognizing a newly loaded CD or DVD that's ready to go until reminded it's there.
I did all the usual things, removed its driver in device manager and rebooted, tried a substitute drive, made sure I had the latest Windows updates and HP bios, tried different discs that work on numerous other computers both commercial and written at home, etc.
Does anybody know of this issue?
