Bios is the bit on the motherboard that you configure to get the other parts of the PC to work nicely together, then you can boot into windows. You tell the Bios what your Hard disk/SSD is plugged into, Windows has no direct connection to the Bios and a HD swap/ format will have no affect on the Bios.

So I'm trying to just backup the hard drive, then run a full recovery, but when I try to run the backup assistant, I get to about 30 percent on any of my 2 external backup drives and then I get an error about destination drive is not connected, but since I can't easily go into check my usb power settings, then I'm sort of stuck, and can't get past this part. Is there a way I can change usb power settings through the bios or anything? This is going on about a month now.....still no laptop, starting to piss me off, why would they force a bios update on me when everything was working fine before??

3 weeks from today, Friday I have my unemployment appeal hearing, lots of money on the line here, and I have to have this up and running as soon as possible....I need all my scans and all my information I had on there for this purpose. This is starting to get to a breaking point for me.

Seems like in the backup if I select users folder at the bottom, it seems to be the only one where the drive losses power or disconnects, the others seem to backup okay, I even had a powered USB hub that's relatively new try to see if it would maintain power, but after a few attempts I decided to go with a cluster of folders at a time, which worked nicely, but seems to still hold up on the users folder, maybe I could try to pick through the users folder, I just wanted to back everything up so that I didn't miss anything. I even thought about and tried moving the touch pad to see if moving the cursor to wake the computer up every minute would work, seemed to help with the other folder backups. I'm now at 6 percent which is farther than I've gotten, and this is try number 2 attempting to backup just the users folder.
