Hello.

I have an HP Pavilion 15 laptop and it won't turn on. When I press the power button, the LED blinks white three times and then goes out. Nothing else happens - the screen is black, the fan doesn't spin.

What I've already done:

Checked the power supply - it outputs 19.5 V, but the current when measured without a load shows ~ 180-200 mA. The power supply is 45 W.

Cleaned the connectors, checked the cable.

Removed the battery and started without it - the result is the same.

Removed and cleaned the RAM with an eraser, put it back.

Tried starting the laptop without RAM - the behavior did not change, all 3 blinks

white. Disassembled the laptop, cleaned, put it back together.

Checked the processor for thermal paste - there was a little spill, but I cleaned it all up.

There is no BIOS (Reset) button.

It seems that the problem is in the RAM or its power supply, but I am not sure.

Please help - how exactly

to decipher 3 white blinks? What to do next?

Thank you!

Hi @EXOMI

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for laying everything out so clearly—and I’m really sorry your HP Pavilion 15 is giving you such a tough time.

That three-blink white LED pattern is definitely trying to tell us something, and you’ve already done a fantastic job narrowing things down.

Here’s what that blink code typically means and what you can try next:

💡 What 3 White Blinks Usually Indicate

On HP laptops, three white blinks from the power LED often point to a memory (RAM) issue. It can mean:

  • The RAM isn’t seated properly
  • The RAM module is faulty
  • The system isn’t detecting any RAM at all

🛠️ What You Can Try Next

Try a Different RAM Module

  • If you have access to another compatible RAM stick, swap it in and test.
  • Even if your current module looks fine, it could be electrically damaged.

Test One Slot at a Time

  • If your laptop has two RAM slots, try inserting the module into just one slot at a time.
  • This helps identify if one slot is faulty.

Inspect RAM Slots Closely

  • Use a flashlight to check for bent pins, dust, or debris inside the RAM slots.
  • Clean gently with compressed air if needed.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect all power sources (battery and adapter).
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the adapter and try powering on.

Let It Charge for a Few Hours

  • One user reported success by leaving the laptop plugged in for 4–6 hours after multiple hard resets.
  • It’s worth a try if the system is stuck in a low-power state.

Check for BIOS Recovery

  • Even without a dedicated BIOS button, some HP laptops support BIOS recovery via key combos.
  • Try pressing Win + B while holding the power button for 2–3 seconds.

You’ve already shown great persistence, and I know how discouraging it can be when nothing seems to work. If you’d like, I can help you check for compatible RAM options or walk through the BIOS recovery steps together.

Let’s keep pushing—your Pavilion might just need one more nudge to wake up! 💪
