8440p Laptop
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi,

Just bought secondhand an 8440p Laptop. Strange problem though, if I plug the power supply in BEFORE booting then all is OK and the battery charges, however if I notice the battery is low whilst using windows then plugging in the charger does nothing and I have to shutdown to start the charger. Could thid be a driver problem ? if so what one do I need.

Thanks in advance for any help available.

Hi and many thanks for your help. I tried your suggestions but sadly with no luck at all. The only way I can get the supply to work is to shut down the laptop and then plug the supply in and reboot.

I have another older HP laptop with the same problem and have had the same advice with that one with the same results.

I have run the battery check and noted nothing untoward there.

I have to say that I am finding HP laptops unreliable in this area, is this your experience ?

Hello @Mark176

Yes, this may be a Windows/driver issue.

  • Did you manage to update your Windows 7 to SP1 ?
  • Did you download and install all Microsoft Windows updates for it ?
  • Have you installed all drivers for HP website ?

Besides the above,  try to perform the below steps to resolve the issue:

  • Click on the Start Button
  • Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
  • Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
  • Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: The Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again
  • Please Shutdown the Notebook
  • Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
  • Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
  • Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
  • Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

After performing all the steps if you are facing the same issue still, please perform three more steps:

1. Download HP Support Assistant >> https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

2. Run a Battery Check from HPSA

3. Let me know the battery check results

Aha !

I jumped the gun there a bit, forgot the magical REBOOT afterwards ! Silly Me

As an aside I notice that plugging in the power supply doesn't turn o the light on the front unless the battery is under 95%, I suppose this is normal.

Tried this with my older HP 6910p laptop with a similar problem but no joy there, battery won't charge beyond 65% either the old battery or a new one.

Anyhow, many thanks indeed for your help, I am very grateful.

All the best

Mark
