Brand new laptop hp 14 that takes forever to open apps. Only had it one day and opening any apps takes approximately 5 minutes. It’s terrible! Bought it as a a Christmas gift for someone and aim so embarrassed! Appreciate any help. Internet connection in my house is great. I run another laptop, desk top, etc with no problems.

Give it time. It may be doing a major Windows update and that can take hours.
It may also be an antivirus scanning the entire drive.
Personally, whenever I setup a new computer for a client, I boot from a USB key and wipe out all the crap the manufacturer preinstalled. It doesn't matter if it from HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc, I wipe all drives and then install the latest Win11-23H2, then I install the latest HP BIOS and drivers.
One still needs to use something like CCleaner.com to remove crap (XBox, Solitaire, Spotify, etc.) to really clean it up and then even a 5-6 year old computer works fine!

Hi @Gailob,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're facing with the new HP 14 laptop. Slow performance on a brand-new device can be frustrating, but there are several things you can check and try to improve the situation. Here are some steps you can take.
- Check for Updates: Ensure that your operating system and all the installed software are up to date. HP often releases updates that can improve performance and fix bugs.
- Update Drivers: Make sure that all your device drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up to date. You can usually find the latest drivers on the HP support website.
- Remove Bloatware: Sometimes, new laptops come with pre-installed software that you may not need. Uninstall unnecessary programs to free up system resources.
- Check for Malware: Run a full system scan with a reliable antivirus or anti-malware software to ensure your laptop is not infected.
- Adjust Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings are optimized for performance. You can do this by going to the Power Options in the Control Panel or Settings and selecting a high-performance plan.
- Check Task Manager: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check which processes are using the most resources. This can help you identify if there are any specific applications causing the slowdown.
- Disk Cleanup: Run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files and unnecessary system files that might be taking up space.
- Disable Startup Programs: Some programs may start automatically with Windows, slowing down the boot process. You can use the Task Manager to disable unnecessary startup programs.
- Adjust Visual Effects: Windows has various visual effects that can be adjusted to improve performance. You can access these settings by right-clicking on "This PC" or "Computer," selecting "Properties," then navigating to "Advanced system settings" and clicking on the "Settings" button under the Performance section.
- Reinstall Problematic Apps: If a specific app is causing issues, try reinstalling it to ensure a clean and properly configured installation.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
