I am trying to set up WSL on my laptop. I keep getting catastrophic failure when booting into my WSL. EVerything says go into Advanced BIOS settings but it isn't there. and nothing unlocks it. This is a sad waste of a purchase if you can't use it for WSL.

Hi @TylerRickard,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing difficulties setting up the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on your HP OmniBook X Snapdragon X Plus laptop. The "catastrophic failure" error when launching WSL often indicates that virtualization support may not be enabled on your system.

Accessing BIOS Settings:

HP laptops typically allow access to BIOS settings by pressing the Esc key repeatedly immediately after powering on the laptop, which opens the Startup Menu. From there, pressing F10 enters the BIOS Setup Utility. However, many HP consumer laptops have limited BIOS options, and advanced settings, including those related to virtualization, might not be visible or configurable.

Enabling Virtualization:

In some cases, virtualization is enabled by default. However, if it's disabled and the BIOS doesn't provide an option to enable it, this can hinder the functionality of WSL, especially WSL2, which relies on virtualization.

Alternative Solutions:

Check Windows Features:

  • Ensure that both "Virtual Machine Platform" and "Windows Subsystem for Linux" are enabled in the Windows Features settings.
  • Press Win + R, type optionalfeatures.exe, and press Enter.
  • In the window that appears, check the boxes for the above features and click OK.
  • Restart your computer if prompted.

Update System Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure your system's firmware (BIOS/UEFI) and drivers are up to date.
  • Visit HP's official support website and enter your laptop's model number to find the latest updates.

Note:

It's important to note that some HP consumer laptops may have limitations regarding virtualization support, especially on ARM-based processors like the Snapdragon series. This could impact the ability to run WSL2 effectively. In such cases, using WSL1, which doesn't require virtualization, might be a viable alternative.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
