I am looking for advice on how to restart a laptop that has been stood in water for a short time. It was switched off with lid closed at the time but will only run the fan. There is no power light when ac adapter is connected although fan only runs when it is connected. Please help

I am sorry that happened.
My opinion
Even a splash of water might damage a computer if the water hits it just right.
"Standing" in water -- even for a short time -- can damage the system beyond what is reasonable to try and repair it.
That said,
If the computer has had a week or so to dry out and it is still dead,
Take the now very dry computer to a local technician and ask for an opinion on what can be done.
For example, ask whether there is a chance to retrieve any of the data - and what that service would cost.
Contact your renter's or homeowner's insurance agent to ask about coverage.
