I occasionally find my Windows 10 laptop powered on when I get up and I'm sure I powered down before going to bed. I don't leave the computer plugged in unless it is really low on battery so having it start up by itself runs the battery down somewhat. In searching for a solution many suggest going into power settings and turning off "allow wake timers" under sleep. I don't have that option and am wondering why and how to enable it.

Hi @taherte2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The missing "Allow wake timers" option in your HP ENVY 17 Laptop PC may be due to specific power plans, Windows policies, or system configurations. Here’s how to address the issue and potentially restore or disable wake timers to prevent your laptop from turning on unexpectedly.
Check for the "Allow Wake Timers" Option in Advanced Settings
- Access Power Options:
- Right-click the battery icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner) and select Power Options.
- Edit Power Plan:
- Click on Change plan settings for the active power plan.
- Select Change advanced power settings.
- Locate the Option:
- In the advanced settings window, expand Sleep > Allow wake timers.
- If available, disable wake timers for both On battery and Plugged in.
If the Option is Missing, Restore It
A. Enable Wake Timers via Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run the following command to enable the wake timers option:
powercfg -attributes SUB_SLEEP 73A5E93F-D4A3-4C48-AB17-50F6E3F24F04 -ATTRIB_HIDE
- Restart your laptop and recheck the advanced power settings.
B. Disable Wake Timers Directly
- You can directly disable wake timers with this command in the Command Prompt:
powercfg /waketimers
- This will display any active wake timers that might be causing the issue.
- Disable the timers using this command:
powercfg -waketimers off
Inspect Scheduled Tasks
- Wake timers can also be triggered by scheduled tasks.
- Open the Task Scheduler by typing it in the Start menu.
- Look for tasks that have the "Wake the computer to run this task" option enabled.
- Right-click on such tasks, select Properties, and uncheck the "Wake" option under the Conditions tab.

Update BIOS and Device Drivers
- Ensure that your BIOS and chipset drivers are up to date, as outdated firmware can sometimes cause unexpected wake behaviors.
Disable Fast Startup
- Fast startup can occasionally trigger unintended wake-ups.
- Open the Control Panel and go to Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Save changes.
Inspect Wake Sources
- Identify what is waking your computer:
- Run this command in Command Prompt:
powercfg -lastwake
- Check for hardware or software causing the wake event.
These steps should help you disable unintended wake-ups and restore the "Allow wake timers" option if it's missing.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
