If numlock is on, the arrow keys will sometimes type numbers rather than just navigating around the document. They do this in both word and exel

Has anyone else had this same problem

My fist laptop of this mode had the same issue and it was replaced with a new laptop and this one is doing exactly the same.

@Mifwilliamson, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding an issue with your HP laptop where the arrow keys type numbers instead of allowing navigation

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

This often occurs when the Num Lock feature is activated. On some laptops, including specific HP models, keyboard configurations may have overlapping functions with the numeric keypad when Num Lock is enabled.

Here are a few steps you can take to address the issue:

Toggle Num Lock: Look for a "Num Lock" key on your keyboard, often located near the upper right part. Pressing this key will toggle the numeric keypad functionality, potentially resolving the issue.

Modify BIOS Settings: If toggling Num Lock manually doesn't help, you might check your BIOS settings for any options related to keyboard configurations or Num Lock. This can often be accessed during boot-up by pressing a specific key like F10 or ESC, but consult your laptop's documentation for exact instructions.

Disable Num Lock on Startup: If the issue occurs during startup, you might be able to set Num Lock to be off by default. This can be done in the BIOS or through specific settings in the Windows operating system under "Ease of Access."

Keyboard Driver Check: Ensure that your keyboard drivers are up to date. You can do this through the Device Manager.

External Keyboard: As a workaround, using an external USB keyboard could offer a solution if the internal keyboard's settings are challenging to modify.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

I am not sure why num lock should mean the arrow keys type numbers occasionally and why I have to take num lock off if I want the arrow keys to work correctly.

I am not talking about the arrow keys that are on numbers 2.4.6 and 8 I am talking about the separate number keys.

I have tried removing num lock which resulted in the number keys not working at all to type numbers but this had no impact on the outcome of the arrow keys occasionally typing numbers.

This is the second HP laptop I have had the same issue with so this is clearly an issue with either firm wear or the design of the laptop keyboard
