You'll either have to dig out the right graphics driver from that stack of files you found, or you can manually install the latest Intel graphics driver by reading my knowledge base article at the link below.

Updating the Latest HD Graphics Driver from Intel...Skylake,... - HP Support Community - 7185608

The only very minor difference in the instructions would be if you see a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter listed under the Display Adapters device manager category instead of an Intel HD graphics adapter, you would click on that instead.

I tried installing the one listed on the machine support page (which also appears on that list of SPs from the OEM drive).  Received a msg that I already had more up to date ones installed, so quit the installer.

I wasn't able to connect with the ftp site you noted previously.  Tried with FF, Edge, and IE.

HP Recommended

It works fine for me on IE11.

Does not work in Edge for some reason, and that is a recent change.

It always used to work using Edge too.

I guess you will have to try my Intel graphics manual install then, or live with the latest Intel graphics driver that W10 installed.

HP wouldn't have newer graphics drivers for notebooks with the Skylake chipsets anyway.

I will look into it (the graphics stuff).  Not worried so much about that given experience I noted above.  More concerned about the internal operations that aren't outwardly obvious -- MEI, Rapid Storage Technology, etc.

Am seeing the following problems in Device Manager under "Other devices":

  • PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller  (no driver)
  • Unknown device  (Dev instance: ACPI\INT3400\2&DABA3FF&1)

My backlit keyboard isn't 100% accurate, either.  Some buttons have dot lights on them when activated, and these are not illuminating.  Current driver is "Standard PS/2 Keyboard".

Finally, is there a page where I can query what a HP SP does?  Dropping one -- e.g., "sp98700" -- into a search box on HP Support pages yields no results.

(And thanks for sticking with me.)

You're very welcome.

That is why you need to have access to the FTP site,

There are normally 3 file links associated with each service pack.

The exe file, the cva file, and the html file.

The HTML file gives a description of the service pack, what it is for, what PC's it is supported on and the driver version and date.

You need this driver for the PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller & Unknown device:

This package contains the driver that enables the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework firmware. Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework provide system temperature and power utilization information for the system thermal protection to function properly. This package is provided for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84016.exe

W10 installed the MEI driver or you would be seeing a PCI Simple Communications Controller device.

The RST driver and software isn't really necessary for your specific model PC, but here it is if you want to install it.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver - Skylake

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84025.exe

Unfortunately, I don't know what you need to do regarding the backlit keyboard lights.

Maybe you need to install the HP System Event Utility for that.  This is the file on your notebook's support page.

This package contains the HP System Event Utility, which enables special function keys on supported notebook models to be programmed. For example, HP System Event Utility enables users to press the Fn+ESC keys to view system information. This package is provided for supported models running a supported operating system.

Re: FTP.   Here's what you wrote:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

I tried this, plus:

sftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

on each of FF, Edge, and IE.  In each case I received either a time out or a permission error.

I can grab specific files, just not directory lists.

HP Recommended

I have tried that too unsuccessfully.

The first link I posted works in IE11 for me without doing anything.

It does not work in edge.

Unfortunately, I don't know why it doesn't work for you.

Anyway, I believe that I have given you all the help I can.

With the driver for those two missing devices I provided, you should be all set other than the backlit keyboard issue.

HP Recommended

Yeah, no problem on the repository.  Was just noting what I tried, in case there was a typo or something obviously wrong.

And yes, sp84016 did the trick -- no more errors in Device Manager!

Just want to run a couple more by you, then I'm out.

1) The DVD burner (HP DVDRW DA8A6SH) has an MS driver (10.0.19041.1).  Is there a different preferred one?

2) There are lots of vendor options for Network drivers on the product page; it's a bit confusing.  I see in Device Mgr that there is a Realtek Controller, yet an Intel WiFi module:

Network Adapters.gif

All but the Intel entry have MS-provided drivers (the one for Realtek is from 2015).  Are there better options here?

(My OEM drive has but one SP that's listed on the support page -- sp80539.  Shall I go with that or something else?  Do these other entries need additional SPs?)

HP Recommended

There is definitely something wrong with why no one can access the FTP site in Edge.

All I did was copy and paste the link to my post, so it couldn't be a typo.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/

The DVD burner's driver is automatically installed by Windows and it has been that way since Windows 2000 came out.

There are no standalone DVD drivers, but you do need to install the cyberlink DVD playing software on your notebook's support page in order to play DVD's.  W10 has no capability of playing DVD's like W7 did.

The Realtek device is the ethernet (wired controller), and the Intel 3165 AC is the wifi adapter.

I would imagine that W10 has installed newer drivers than what appear on your notebook's support page.

If not, you install the Intel wifi driver and the Realtek LAN driver.  The rest are N/A.

Looks like sp80539 is a newer ethernet driver than what W10 installed....

This is a copy and paste of the info I can see on the FTP site that you can't...

You may want to install the latest driver that Intel has for the wifi and bluetooth directly from Intel...

Wifi:

Download Windows® 10 Wi-Fi Drivers for Intel® Wireless Adapters

BT:

Download Intel® Wireless Bluetooth® for Windows® 10

Read the release notes for what versions of the driver you will get.

For example the 3165 wifi driver should be 20.100.7.1.

In any event, the above drivers will be newer than what W10 installed, and newer than the Intel wifi driver HP has.

If you want the latest ethernet driver, you can get it from the Realtek site below...download, unzip and run the setup application from the W10 driver...4th one down on the Windows driver section.
