Hi @DRDAN12,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion laptop and the issue where it’s stuck on “System updates are underway. Please keep your device on and plugged in.” Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Perform a Hard Reset
– Turn the laptop off by holding the power button for 10–15 seconds.
– Disconnect all accessories, then power it back on to clear any stalled firmware process.

Try a BIOS Recovery
– With the laptop off, press and hold Windows + B, then press the power button.
– Keep holding Windows + B for 10 seconds until the BIOS recovery screen appears.
– If the recovery tool loads, follow the on-screen instructions.

Boot to HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics
– Turn the laptop off → press Esc repeatedly → select F2.
– If diagnostics opens, the system firmware is still functional.
– Run “System Tests → Quick Test” to ensure hardware is stable.

Reset BIOS using the Diagnostics Menu
– In the UEFI menu, go to Firmware Management.
– Choose BIOS UpdateRollback BIOS (if available).
– This helps if a BIOS update failed and the system got stuck.

Try Booting Without the Battery (for removable-battery models)
– Remove the battery and power adapter.
– Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
– Connect the adapter only and turn it on to rule out a power or EC issue.

Check if the Caps Lock/Num Lock keys blink
– If you see a blinking pattern, it indicates a BIOS corruption or hardware error.
– Note the blink pattern and match it with HP’s diagnostic codes to identify the failing component.

Attempt to boot from another device
– Insert a Windows USB installer and try booting (press Esc → F9).
– If the laptop can reach the boot menu, the BIOS is partially functional and the OS may be stuck.

I hope this helps.
