Hi HP Support Community, I have an HP laptop that’s correctly identified on HP’s support site, but in Windows, the BIOS reports the serial number as "Default string". Because of this, Microsoft’s device portal can’t link my laptop properly to my online account. Is there a way to update or reflash the BIOS so the correct serial number is embedded and recognized by Windows? Thanks in advance!

Ps. This was written with the help of AI, I just know that no matter how many times I try to "register device" on my online Microsoft OneDrive it keeps telling me "We didn't recognize this serial number". I can access my Microsoft account on my laptop, but when I check online my laptop isn't registered on my account. And yes, I tried Fn + Esc and I checked the bottom of the laptop for the SN#, they were the same line of number and letters and didn't work.

AI told me this was more of HP issue than a Microsoft issue.

Hi @AK533694,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you're experiencing an issue where your HP laptop BIOS displays "Default string" instead of the correct serial number, which prevents Microsoft services like OneDrive and Device Portal from recognizing your device.

Why This Happens

This typically occurs when:

  • The system board was replaced, and the DMI (Desktop Management Interface) data was not reprogrammed.
  • The BIOS was reset or flashed improperly.
  • The serial number was not embedded correctly during manufacturing or service.

Recommended Solution

To resolve this, the BIOS must be rebranded using HP's internal DMI Utility, which is only available to HP Authorized Service Providers. This utility allows technicians to reprogram the correct serial number, product name, and other system identifiers into the BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
