BIOS corrupted when upgrading BIOS for HP i17 Zbook G1/G2, without human intervention or interruption during installation. Now, when restarting the screen is black, the fan does not turn on and only 2 LEDs blink 7-8 times. Does anyone know a solution to revert to the old BIOS?

Hello.

The LED blink codes are listed on a HP Support Document:

HP Notebook PCs - Computer beeps or a light blinks during startup | HP® Support

G1 and G2 are different models with different BIOS upgrades.

Hi @Vaandioo,

It sounds like your HP ZBook 17 G1 is experiencing a BIOS corruption issue. This can happen during a failed update, leading to symptoms such as a black screen and blinking LEDs. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue:

Steps to Recover Your BIOS:

  1. Identify the Blink Code:

    • The blinking LED code is crucial as it indicates the type of error. Generally, if two LEDs blink 7-8 times repeatedly, it suggests a specific category of BIOS or hardware issue that needs addressing.
  2. BIOS Recovery Using a Key Press Combination:

    • Ensure your laptop is powered off.
    • Press and hold the "Windows" key + "B" key at the same time, then press the "Power" button for around 1-3 seconds. Release the "Power" button but continue holding the other two keys until you hear beeping sounds or see a recovery screen.
    • This process should trigger the BIOS recovery if it has a backup stored within the system.
  3. Create a BIOS Recovery USB:

    • If the key press method doesn’t work, try using another computer to create a BIOS recovery USB drive as follows:
      • Download the latest BIOS version from the HP support website HP Support.
      • Use HP’s BIOS Update Utility found in the download to create a USB recovery drive. Follow on-screen instructions carefully.
      • Insert the USB drive into the affected laptop and repeat the key press combination again to trigger a recovery.
