Hi @SG154,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A BIOS update should not take more than an hour in most cases. Since your HP Pavilion laptop's BIOS update has been stuck at 76% for 3 hours, here are the steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Wait a bit longer: Sometimes, updates may take longer than expected. If you haven't already, give it another 30 minutes to an hour to see if the update progresses.

Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the Power Adapter: Disconnect your laptop from the power source.
  • Remove the Battery: If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
  • Hold Down the Power Button: Press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the Power Adapter: Plug the power adapter back in (you can skip inserting the battery for now if it’s removable).
  • Power On: Turn on your laptop.

Recovery Options:

  • BIOS Recovery Mode: Many HP laptops have a built-in BIOS recovery feature. To access it:
    • Turn Off the Laptop: Make sure your laptop is completely turned off.
    • Press and Hold the Windows + B Keys: While holding these keys, press the power button for 2-3 seconds, then release the power button but continue holding the Windows + B keys.
    • Release the Keys: Once you see the BIOS update or recovery screen, release the keys.

Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive:

  • Another Computer: If possible, use another computer to download the latest BIOS file from the HP support website.
  • Create Recovery Drive: Follow HP's instructions to create a BIOS recovery USB drive. Insert the USB drive into your laptop and follow the instructions to initiate a BIOS recovery.

Taking these steps should help you recover your laptop from a stuck BIOS update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
