Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So...owner is locked out of laptop. Does not know password, cannot format and reinstall.

So...trying some of the numerous password clear programs out there. None of them detect the Windows 10 installation, even though it is there and I can boot right to the Windows login screen. I have to turn on legacy support in the BIOS to even show the USB/CD drive.

Now trying to update the BIOS thinking this may fix the USB/CD/Windows 10 boot problem. This is 3 versions behind. Found the BIOS program, download and run, selecting the USB device as the output. The program plainly says it is putting "all the files in the Hewlett Packard folder". Done. Check it, yes folder is there...put in laptop, restart. F9 to tell it to boot from USB, then all I get is  "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart." No matter what I do after that, it says "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"...

The HP softpack to make a bootable USB drive for the BIOS does not appear to be working correctly.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand the device isn't booting into windows after the recent BIOS update was installed,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you attempted to recover the BIOS?

Did you use the HP Recovery Manager/Media to reinstall the OS?

Have you performed a hard reset?

(If not, let's start with HP Notebook PCs - Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset )

As for the BIOS recovery, here's what you need to do:

View this video on YouTube.

  1. Turn off the notebook.

  2. Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.

  3. With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key  and the B key at the same time.

       NOTE:

On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key  and the V key.

  4. While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key  and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

If the issue persists and you have been using the retail copy of windows, try the HP Recovery Manager instead:

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.
