hp 250 g4

HI

I got some problems when I tried to update my bios on hp 250 G4 notebook. I have win 11 installed but on the official hp website I can download just win 10 bios update. After installed this Im getting error message that BIOS update is blocked on this device. I tried to create it on flash drive I can just exFAT format the usb drive) but I can't load the BIOS update menu. No option for this in the BIOS and tried to switch off and press win plus b keys but no result(it said bios update failed), same with pressing del button another time.

Any help would be appreciated

thanks

Hi @Zoltan14

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

For this HP 250 G4 Notebook, the message"BIOS update is blocked on this device" usually means the BIOS package you downloaded does not match the notebook's exact system board, BIOS family, or supported firmware version. It is not necessarily caused by Windows 11 itself.

Verify the exact product number

  • Press F1 or enter BIOS and note the full product number (not just "HP 250 G4").
  • Compare it with the model listed on the HP driver page before downloading a BIOS update.

Check the current BIOS version

  • In Windows, run msinfo32.
  • Note the BIOS Version/Date.
  • Only install a newer BIOS intended specifically for your product.

Use the HP BIOS package even though Windows 11 is installed

  • The HP 250 G4 Notebook PC driver page only lists Windows 10 support. HP often provides the same BIOS package regardless of the installed Windows version.
  • However, if the package reports "blocked on this device," double-check that the BIOS file matches the exact product number.

Create a BIOS recovery USB correctly

  • HP BIOS recovery USB drives typically require FAT32, not exFAT.
  • If your USB drive is large and Windows only offers exFAT, use a smaller USB drive (8 GB or 16 GB is ideal) and format it as FAT32. Recovery methods generally rely on FAT32-formatted media.

Attempt BIOS Recovery

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Connect AC power.
  • Hold Windows + B, then press the Power button.
  • Continue holding Windows + B for several seconds and check whether the BIOS Recovery screen appears again.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I downloaded the BIOS update from the official HP website and I found my exact model so there isn't any discrepancy with this just they they don't have win 11 version like on my computer just win 10. I tried the usb update now with a FAt32 format but after the system loaded the BIOS update menu,  within a few seconds the screen changed "The system bios recovery failed. BIOS image file specified did not pass validation"

Hi @Zoltan14

Thank you for responding.

The BIOS update utility is able to detect and read the update file from the USB drive, but then rejects it with "BIOS image file specified did not pass validation" and "BIOS update is blocked on this device."

These messages typically indicate that the BIOS image does not match the system's platform ID, system board ID, or firmware requirements, rather than a configuration setting stored in BIOS. If a BIOS setting were the cause, I would expect the update process to fail earlier or report a security-related restriction instead of a file validation error. I would request you to please share me the Serial Number via private message and also follow the link and try again.
