HP ENVY x360 - 15m-cn0012dx
Microsoft Windows 11

Yesterday morning my PC received an unexpected BIOS update and is now running hot and the fan is much louder than ever before.  Everything was fine before the update and now I worry something is wrong.  Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Hi @MAS151,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP ENVY x360 laptop after a BIOS update. Sudden temperature increases and loud fan noise can be concerning, but there are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and access the BIOS settings (usually by pressing a specific key during startup, like F2 or Delete).
  • Look for any settings related to fan speed or cooling. Ensure that they are set to their default or recommended values.
  • If you're not familiar with BIOS settings, it's best to leave them at their default values unless you know what you're doing.

Reset BIOS to Default:

  • If you suspect that the BIOS update changed settings that are causing the overheating, you can try resetting the BIOS settings to their default values. There should be an option to do this within the BIOS menu.

Update Drivers:

  • Make sure that all your device drivers, especially the ones related to CPU and cooling, are up to date. You can do this through the Device Manager in Windows.

Check for Dust and Blockages:

  • Overheating can occur if the laptop's cooling system is clogged with dust or other debris. Carefully open the laptop and clean the fans and heat sinks with compressed air.

Monitor Temperature:

  • Install a temperature monitoring tool like HWMonitor or Core Temp to check your CPU and GPU temperatures. If they are consistently too high, this could indicate a cooling problem.

Roll Back the BIOS Update:

  • If you suspect the BIOS update is the cause of the issue, some laptops allow you to roll back to a previous BIOS version. Check your manufacturer's website for instructions on how to do this.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
