HP Notebook - 15-bs161s
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, notebook done a bios update and now won't reboot, it was working fine before the update. I've tried the windows+b and v, escape on start up, F2, F10, F6 etc. Have also tried hard reset with battery in and out, disconnected from AC etc. Has anyone any ideas, wish I'd never updated it now. Thanks in advance.

Hi @Petey11 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Notebook after the BIOS update. Here are a few steps you can try to recover your system:

1. Perform a BIOS Recovery

HP provides a method to recover the BIOS using a key combination. Here’s how you can try it:

  1. Power off the laptop and disconnect it from any AC adapter.
  2. Press and hold the Windows key + B key simultaneously and then press the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows + B keys until you see the BIOS update screen or hear beeps.
  4. If the recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions to restore the BIOS.

2. Using an External USB Flash Drive for BIOS Recovery

If the above method does not work, you can try using an external USB drive to recover the BIOS:

Prepare a USB flash drive:

  • Format a USB flash drive to FAT32.
  • Download the BIOS update file from the HP support site.
  • Copy the BIOS update file to the root directory of the USB flash drive.

Perform the BIOS recovery:

  • Insert the USB flash drive into the laptop.
  • Press and hold the Windows key + B key simultaneously, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows + B keys until the recovery screen appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the BIOS.

3. Try a BIOS Rollback

If the BIOS update provided by HP doesn't work, you can try to roll back to an earlier version:

  1. Go to the HP Drivers & Downloads page for your specific model.
  2. Find an earlier BIOS version and download it.
  3. Follow the instructions for creating a BIOS recovery USB flash drive as described above.
  4. Use the USB flash drive to install the older BIOS version.

4. Check for Hardware Issues HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

Sometimes, hardware issues can prevent the BIOS recovery from working properly. Ensure that:

  • The RAM is properly seated.
  • The hard drive is properly connected.
  • There are no other hardware issues that could be causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
