I’m facing an issue with the BIOS on my HP laptop. The system often freezes on the BIOS screen during startup and sometimes doesn’t save the settings after I make changes. The system occasionally restarts on its own before loading Windows. I’ve already tried resetting the BIOS to default, disconnecting all peripherals, and checking for any newer updates, but the issue still persists. Has anyone experienced this or found a reliable fix? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @jameskarl908

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm truly sorry you're dealing with such a disruptive BIOS issue—let’s work through this together and bring your HP laptop back to smooth, reliable startup.

When BIOS freezes, fails to save settings, or causes random restarts, it often points to firmware instability or a miscommunication between hardware and BIOS memory. Since you've already tried resetting and updating, here’s a deeper, more tactile approach to help stabilize your system:

1. Perform a BIOS Recovery Using Key Combination

If the BIOS is partially corrupted, restoring it manually can help:

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Continue holding Windows + B for about 10 seconds, then release.
  • The screen may remain blank for a few moments, then the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery.

More details here: Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System)

2. Use HP’s BIOS Recovery and Update Utility

If the recovery screen doesn’t appear, you can create a BIOS recovery USB:

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your laptop’s model number.
  • Under BIOS, download the latest version.
  • Run the installer and choose Create Recovery USB.
  • Insert the USB into your laptop and repeat the Windows + B recovery steps.

This method refreshes the BIOS firmware from a clean source.

3. Run HP’s Performance Tune Check for System Stability

To rule out deeper system-level freezes:

  • Install HP Support Assistant from here
  • Launch the app and run Performance Tune Check.
  • This scan optimizes startup behavior and checks for firmware inconsistencies.

4. Reset Embedded Controller (EC)

This step clears residual power and resets low-level firmware:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and turn on the laptop.

This can help resolve BIOS settings not saving or erratic restarts.

5. Update BIOS via Windows (if accessible)

If your system occasionally boots into Windows:

  • Download the latest BIOS update from your model’s page on HP Drivers.
  • Run the update utility and follow on-screen instructions carefully.
  • Ensure the laptop is plugged in and do not interrupt the process.

Let me know how these steps go—each one is designed to gently reset and restore your BIOS environment. If the issue continues, I’ll guide you through advanced diagnostics or alternate recovery paths.

You're doing the right thing by seeking help, and we’ll get your system back to a confident, stable boot.
