BSOD in SPUVCbv64.sys when waking from hybernation reporting SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED in my laptops: HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX,  with IR face camera

Both are with IR face login camera and issue happens randomly from hybernation.

BSOD reports SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED in SPUVCbv64.sys

This is IR face camera driver and I see many people complaining without any actual real solution that works (other than people being misled as the nature of the issue is random or they just give up).

This issue looks to have long history and PLEASE HP, instead of walking people arround with useless misguidance, FIX IT once for all as your reputation is at stake. If you still have IR driver development team, contact them to reproduce and fix! If your team is subcontracted, contact them and either demand to fix per support or pay to fix. Either way, please do not ignore this as it is getting very bad for HP reputation!

@Xiaogen,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.

As I understand you are getting BSOD errors regarding the SPUVCBv64.sys driver,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Have you tried to reinstall the drivers from our HP support website?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Let's start off by checking for Windows update:

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to update the Bios, Chipset, graphics card drivers and HP TrueVision Full HD (FHD) RGB-IR Webcam Driver either from our HP support website or by downloading it from HP Support Assistant.

Download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi xiaogen, I have the hp spectre x360 kaby lake with ir login and have faced the exact problem you are describing. Let me know if you still have the laptop and are keen on knowing the solution.

@alfatehhabbal

Providing your solution would be great. I have a similiar model which does the BSOD occasionally with same error.

Okay I noticed that the issue would occur exactly after the camera recognises my face in the lock screen. In the settings I looked around and changed one thing that solved it for me and I hope it solves it for you guys as well.

Basically go to Settings, then accounts, then sign-in options, and scroll down under Windows hello, and disable the "automatically dismiss the lock screen if we recognise your face" option.

When this option was turned on, I got the BSOD/crash basically every single day. It was way too annoying.

After I turned off this option, I didn't get the BSOD/crash not once in the last month! Knock on wood.

Let me know if this helped. Good luck!

I got the same error which normally occurs once a week coming out of sleep.  I'll try your suggestion and see if it still happens.
