Hi, I just bought hp elitebook 840 g5, but I'm getting a serious battery issue with that whenever I shutdown it , battery drains overnight from 100 to 40. I have try many troubleshooting options on the internet like disabling Fast startup and also replace the battery as well as reinstall the windows but nothing fixed. I also disable some setting in the bios like runtime power management, Extended Idle Power state and Usb charging but still not fix. I would be really grateful if someone solve my issue.

It's concerning to experience battery drain even when the laptop is fully shut down. Here are some additional steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue with your HP EliteBook 840 G5:
1. Check Power Settings in BIOS: Ensure that there are no specific settings in the BIOS contributing to this issue. Double-check power-related configurations and, if possible, restore BIOS settings to default.
2. Hardware Disconnect: To rule out any hardware-related issues, perform a hard reset by unplugging all external devices, including USBs, peripherals, and the power adapter. Then, press and hold the laptop's power button for around 15-30 seconds. This can discharge any residual power and reset the hardware components.
3. Check for Wake-on-LAN or Wake-on-USB: These settings can sometimes cause a device to wake up from a shutdown state. Ensure they are disabled to prevent any unintended wake-up activities.
4. Check for Background Processes: Before shutting down the laptop, ensure there are no ongoing tasks or applications running in the background. Some applications or scheduled tasks might prevent the laptop from entering a complete shutdown state.
5. Update BIOS and Drivers: Check for any available BIOS updates for your HP EliteBook 840 G5 on HP's official website. Similarly, update all drivers to the latest versions available. Sometimes, outdated firmware or drivers can cause unexpected power-related issues.
6. Power Configuration Settings in Windows:
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type powercfg /batteryreport. This generates a battery report that can provide insights into power usage. Review the report for any abnormal power consumption patterns.
Additionally, run the command powercfg /lastwake in Command Prompt as an administrator after the laptop wakes up unexpectedly. This command displays the last device that caused the system to wake up. It might provide information about what's causing the drain.
7. HP Support Assistance: If none of the above solutions work, it's recommended to contact HP support directly. Describe the issue and the steps you've already taken to troubleshoot. They might provide specific diagnostics or solutions for your laptop model.
8. Professional Assistance: If the problem persists, considering professional assistance from a technician or a computer repair specialist might be necessary to thoroughly inspect the hardware and diagnose the issue.
Battery drain while the laptop is completely shut down is not typical behavior and could be due to several reasons, ranging from software settings to hardware issues. It might take some trial and error to identify the root cause. If these steps don’t resolve the problem, contacting HP support or a professional technician is the next best step.

Looking through the BIOS update history I noticed there were a lot of "Battery fixes"
I assume you have the August 2023 BIOS update.
I do not think your system is powering off when you click on shutdown. Please verify that shutdown corresponds to power off as shown below
If it is not turning of I would return it and get a replacement.
