My battery keeps dying when the computer is off. (its not in hibernation/sleep mode).

I usually turn off my Wi-Fi before I shut down the computer which I thought could be the problem.

I also thought it could be energy saver and have turned it off and on to test that out, but I don't think that's what draining the battery.

However, if I don't turn on my computer for a week or so, the battery is low even though I have not used it. I wasn't sure what it could be and have tried to google.

I also have looked on the community and have tried these:

Some devices know to cause power drain

  • USB hubs that can allow charging of devices
  • Thunderbolt port that can be used to dock with
  • The Intel Management Engine may tasks some device to maintain power.
  • Run the following command from the windows administrators command prompt to find devices that can wake up a laptop or desktop that is supposedly turned off. It only shows a keyboard. I have no usb .

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks 😃

Hi @Lj551,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • How long does it usually take for the battery to drain when the laptop is shut down?
  • Do you notice any lights (charging light, keyboard backlight, etc.) staying on after shutdown?
  • Have you updated your BIOS and chipset drivers recently? Sometimes firmware updates address power drain issues.
  • Is your laptop connected to any docking stations or external devices when powered off?

 Suggested troubleshooting steps

  1. Check Fast Startup
    • Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • If Turn on fast startup is enabled, try disabling it. Fast Startup can sometimes cause residual power draw.
  2. BIOS Settings
    • Restart your laptop and enter BIOS (usually by pressing Esc or F10 at startup).
    • Look for options related to USB charging while off or Wake on LAN and disable them.
  3. Update BIOS and Drivers
  4. Battery Health Check
    • In HP Support Assistant, run a battery diagnostic to check if the battery itself is holding charge properly.
  5. Full Power Drain Reset
  • Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Then recharge the battery fully before using again.

I hope this helps.
