I have the HP Victus 15-fb0178AX, 16gb ram , Ryzen 5 5600H and RTX 3050 4gb. Its around 2 or 2.5 years old and I used to keep it plugged in all the time.

Lately I noticed it was running hot so i got a technician to get the thermal paste redone and we found out that the battery was swollen mildly from all the overcharging through the years , The hp battery optimisation was enabled all these years.

Today I got the battery changed , And what I noticed is its not charging above 80% - my OS says "not charging" instead of "discharging" which it usually says when its not plugged in, I drained it down to 30% and charged it again , but at 80% it simply stops. I wanted to ask if this is normal for this model and if anyone else has this , because I can't find anything regarding this on the internet.

I did not change anything , nor did the technician , he just changed the battery , and turned on the laptop - this was all done in front of me.

Would appreciate any insights, thanks!

Hi @lukutu,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the detailed information. I can understand why this caught your attention, especially after replacing the battery.

Based on what you've described, if the notebook consistently stops charging at 80% and Windows shows "Plugged in, not charging," it may be related to a battery management feature or a BIOS setting rather than the replacement battery itself.

To help rule that out, I'd recommend trying the following:

  1. Perform a BIOS Recovery
    • Turn off the notebook.
    • Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
    • While holding the keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release only the Power button while continuing to hold Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the process to complete.

  2. Check for BIOS updates
  3. Run the HP Battery Test
    • Open HP Support Assistant and run the Battery Test
    • Alternatively, restart the notebook, press Esc repeatedly at startup, then press F2 to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and run the Battery Test

Could you also let me know:

  • Was the replacement battery a genuine HP battery installed by an HP Authorized Service Center, or was it replaced by a local technician?
  • Does the BIOS also report the battery stopping at 80%, or is this only shown in Windows?

The results of the BIOS recovery, battery diagnostics, and BIOS update will help determine whether this is expected battery management behavior or if the new battery or its configuration requires further attention. I'll be happy to help you with the next steps once you have the results.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
