Help me please. I am a nursing student and bought this laptop for its reliability... well.. every time I try to use it, it won’t charge unless it is turned off... and a white light shows up when I have it plugged in... when it should be orange.. I’m on this thing at all hours of the night studying and it turns off on me and says the battery is dead, even though it’s plugged in

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

What you describe could be the battery not charging or not holding a charge and/or the charger not working.
 
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

If those confirm the battery is not charging or not holding a charge, you would need to replace it.
 
If those confirm the charger is not working, you would need to replace that.
 
If both the battery and charger check out OK, then it's an internal problem with the circuitry in the laptop,  and if the laptop is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support to see about getting it repaired or replaced ...
