Hi @joe281,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To update the BIOS or change the settings on an HP laptop, you typically need the BIOS password. If you've purchased a used HP laptop and don't have the password, you can try the following options.

Reset the BIOS Password:

  • Use a Master Password (if available): Sometimes, manufacturers provide a master password for specific laptops. However, this may not be available for all models.
  • Remove the CMOS Battery: This is a hardware-based method to reset the BIOS password. By removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then reinserting it, you might reset the BIOS password to default. Note that this may require opening the laptop and could void the warranty or damage components if not done correctly.

HP BIOS Recovery:

  • For some HP laptops, you may be able to use HP's BIOS recovery feature. This usually involves downloading a BIOS update file from HP's website, placing it on a USB drive, and then using a key combination (often Windows + B) during boot to initiate the recovery process.

Factory Reset or System Restore: If you're trying to update Windows or reset the system, and not necessarily the BIOS, you might want to consider performing a system restore or a factory reset, which can be done without the BIOS password. You can do this through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
