Hi. I recently (regrettably) updated my firmware through windows updates. Since then my laptop won’t boot, it is saying I don’t have a hard drive installed. I have an SSD installed I recently upgraded from my old HDD. Weirdly it will boot when I put my old painfully slow HDD back in the laptop.
I think the BIOS update is causing this problem. I have seen the instructions on recovering the bios by downloading the BIOS from HP however my laptop was originally Windows 10 and since then I upgraded to 11. The drop down option on my latop only offers windows 10 as an option. Is it presuming that the BIOS update has caused this. The serial number when I enter the BIOS settings is ADCDE01234 which I find very suspicious also. Help!!

Hi:
Watch these videos for how to make and use a BIOS recovery flash drive:
Read the release notes for the BIOS update to make sure it will let you go back to an older version if you have to.
The previous BIOS releases can be found by clicking to expand the Revision History section on the latest BIOS update page.

Thanks for that. The issue I have is that when I put my serial and product number in it brings up my laptop. It asks for me to select my operating system but only has Windows 10 listed. I upgraded to Windows 11 a couple of years ago. I don’t know which one to select. If I restore my laptop will it wind it back to 10 or is this not necessary?

You're very welcome.
It doesn't matter if you follow the instructions to update the BIOS with the USB flash drive since you won't be running it with any operating system.
The BIOS update is only going to affect the BIOS not put your PC's operating back to W10.
A factory reset or OS recovery does that.
