What you were doing and experienced:

1. I Updated windows 10 (1803) and then suddenly kept experiencing a blue screen (system thread exception not handled. Ntfs.sys)

2. I then contacted micrisoft to resolve it. They tried many different ways to try and get windows 10 update installed but it always failed at the last moment. They then advised me to delete all my drives on the laptop and run a memory test. The memory test failed and they concluded from this that the BIOS is misconfigured and needs resetting so I will have to contact HP to do that.

I complained to them as they made me delete all my drives and left me with an unworkable laptop. My hp laptop is out of warranty so I am trying to see for options to fix it myself. I told them this and was told that BIOS is a standard thing on a laptop and hp should be able to help with this without charging?

 

3. I have tried all the 5 steps in the hp link to reset BIOS but it is not working. I am still left with a black screen that says “boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk”.

 

Can anyone suggest some options?

If you ran the memory test and the memory test failed, then you must replace the memory to resolve any issues.  

If you ran the primary hard disk (hard drive) test and it failed, then you must replace the hard disk to resolve any issues.


Lastly, if you have damaged/deleted the system software/partitions then you will need to reinstall Windows and your hardware drivers from scratch...which is also required if you replace the hard disk.

 

If you are out of warranty with HP, then I would recommend taking your computer to a local repair shop to have them fix it for you.

If you'd like to continue troubleshooting the problem on your own, you can.  Boot into the HP Diagnostics Menu by tapping F2 when you first power on your computer and see if you can narrow the issue down.

If you ran the memory test and the memory test failed, then you must replace the memory to resolve any issues.

I have 2 x 8Gb memory cards on my laptop. I opened my laptop, took one out and ran a memory test on it. Then did same thing with other memory card and found 1 memory test failed (indicating memory card was not working how it should be).

 

Extra thing: I tested both memory slots with the working memory card just to ensure the memory slots were ok. This was fine.

 

I put faulty memory card aside so laptop is running with only 1x8Gb memory card.

 

I then put the cover back on, turned laptop on and pressed F10 to go on a screen that allowed me to ‘enabled legacy mode’. This then immediately recognised my usb with windows 10 installation files on it. It automatically brought the drives back and I managed to smoothly go through the windows installation process following the steps online.

 

I am now googling for a new 8Gb memory card to replace the one that is faulty.
