Envy x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I turn on my laptop, Envy x360, a screen requesting a Bitlocker  code immediately appears. After I put in the code, the welcome screen appears. I thought this would only be a one time request, but for the second time  when I opened my laptop I was asked for this very long code. This is a new laptop. Should I return the laptop or can this request for a Bitlocker code be resolved?

@RivalRock Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are facing issues with BitLocker recovery.

HP computers with BitLocker or BitLocker Automatic Device Encryption and Windows 10.

Example of the recovery key request screen

Computers encrypted with BitLocker or BitLocker Automatic Device Encryption might require a recovery key after one of the following events:

  • A Microsoft Push Button reset

  • Disabling Secure Boot or Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

  • Hardware changes such as adding or removing video or network cards

For a list of examples, go to the BitLocker Recovery Guide Plan (in English).

Your recovery key back up process is normally initiated manually when BitLocker is turned on. If you log in to your computer using a Microsoft account, the encryption starts automatically and the recovery key is backed up to your Microsoft account.

Retrieve, and then enter the recovery key to start continue using your computer again.

Retrieve the recovery key from your Microsoft account

When you sign in using a Microsoft account, drive encryption starts automatically. If there is a problem and you are unable to sign in, you must use the recovery key to sign in.

  1. Using another computer or mobile device, go to https://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey (in English).

  2. In the Microsoft account option, click Sign in.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to log in to your Microsoft account.

  4. If you have multiple computers, you can identify the correct key by matching the Device Name.

  5. Type the recovery key into the Enter the recovery key... field in Windows, and then click Continue.
