I recently got an error saying that the "Secure Boot" settings has changed and I have to enter my bitlocker recovery key. However after following the instructions and checking my Microsoft account, I have no bitlocker recovery key. How do I fix this issue? HP Pavilion 15 eg3xxx

Hi @midnightsniper0,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how stressful it is to be locked out of your HP Pavilion 15-eg3xxx laptop due to a BitLocker recovery key prompt, especially when you can't find the key in your Microsoft account.

Let’s walk through what this means and how to fix it.

The message about Secure Boot settings changing likely triggered BitLocker to enter recovery mode. This can happen due to:

  • BIOS updates or changes
  • TPM (Trusted Platform Module) resets
  • Secure Boot is being enabled/disabled
  • Hardware changes

BitLocker sees this as a potential security risk and asks for the recovery key to ensure it’s still you accessing the system.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check All Microsoft Accounts

Sometimes the recovery key is saved under a different Microsoft account than expected:

2. Check Azure AD or Work/School Account

If the laptop was ever connected to a work or school account:

  • Visit the same link above and sign in with that account.
  • Or contact your IT admin if applicable.

3. Check for Printouts or USB Backup

Some users print or save the recovery key during setup. Check:

  • USB drives
  • External hard drives
  • Physical documents

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
