HP Spectre x360 - 15-bl000na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear all,

I recently purchased this HP Spectre x360 for university. I've had it since 31/08 but I've only used it a couple of times to test it. Last night it wanted to install windows updates, so I let it. After installing, it left me at the log on screen. When logging on, it just leaves me with a black screen and a mouse cursor. I can use the keyboard to get to task manager but I can't load any processes.

Annoyed, I tried a bit of googling but all the tips did not resolve the issue. I factory reset the device and it worked again. However, the device wanted to update agian. I made a system restore point and let it update. Black screen again after updating. Loaded system restore point, black screen on that as well.

It loads fine up until the log on screen. Then when I type the password or use face recognition, it spins for a while and then loads a black screen with a cursor.

Currently on v1703 Build 15063.540 which I checked in safe mode. Note, safe mode does load the desktop environment.

I am very frustrated with this. Please can anyone offer any tips

Hi @JohnJimmyDoe

I know the guys at HP are working on this... but a work around, is to wait 10 minutes, literally, for the desktop to appear, then change the pwer settings to "Hibernate" when closing the lid. At least to shut down... just close the lid, and power button to turn back on. It powers straight back up.

It's obviously something delivered by the microsoft updates.

Sadly, with Windows 10 home edition, you can't turn them off now.

Ex-Compaq accredited ProLiant Engineer, Windows 3.11,95, 98, 2000, NT 4 and XP admin, Netware 4.11 administrator, and now have a go dabbler with 7,8 and 10. A bit rusty, but still get there...eventually 🙂

Hi Lainchir,

Thank you for your reply, it was very helpful. The desktop environment has just loaded. Hibernation seems to work as well. Hopefully HP and Microsoft can find a solution soon though as this is can only be treated as a temporary fix

I have had this problem as well with two laptops (amd and intel) I got from best buy. I think it was associated with the bios updates, so I will definitely try a factory reset

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my kid's Envy which is about (2) months old. So to make sure I understand this correctly.  I would need to make the computer "Hibernate" instead of shutting  it down to power it off. If I don't do this it will take 10mins for  windows 10 to load.

thx,

CB

Hi,

Found the fix through HP phone support, and it worked for my college kid since I'm her facetime support 🙂

I was instructed to login as normal, and wait 5-10 mins until the desktop shows up.

Go to the search bar at the left bottom corner (if you didn't change or move it) type "msconfig".

Then at the top tab choose (Services). Next uncheck "App Readyness" apply, and accept restart.

It should boot normally at least it did for my 18 year old daughter. This worked on an Envy-15_360 laptop with Windows-10 (home).

Hi ,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but disabling this service is also a work around, since the app readiness service IS required by windows. You still may be required to restart the service (according to the windows forums)

HP still need to talk to microsoft to find out why this is failing.

Just experienced this too, very disappointing considering I've only had it a day!

Thanks for the rreplies on here though.

Using the 'hibernate' option from above for the time being, hopefully it'll be posted here when resolved.

I may have jumped the gun to say this is a "Fix" since it's actually

disabling an Windows service. I do like this one so far instead of the Hibernate one.

Thanks,

What does 'hibernate' actually do anyway?
