Hey all. Really would like to sort my laptop out today if possible, before the tech guys are available on Monday.  Does anyone have any support ideas on how to sort my laptop out. When I press start the black firewall/Hp logo on screen and I have a ring buffering and that it. It won’t start up into anything else. Any ideas?

Hi @Kpfrosty,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is having trouble starting up past the initial HP logo. This can be due to various issues, including hardware problems, corrupted system files, or issues with the boot process. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power off the laptop: Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop shuts down completely.
  • Disconnect all peripherals: Unplug any external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, etc.).
  • Remove the battery (if removable): If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
  • Hold the power button: Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power: Put the battery back in (if applicable) and reconnect the power adapter.
  • Turn on the laptop: Press the power button and see if it starts up properly.

2. Check for External Display Issues

  • External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to check if the display issue might be specific to the laptop’s screen.

3. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly press F8 (or Shift + F8) as soon as the HP logo appears. This should bring up the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Select Safe Mode: If you can get to Safe Mode, it means there's a potential issue with drivers or system files.

4. Perform Startup Repair

  • Power off the laptop.Turn it on and repeatedly press F11 (or Esc, then F11) as soon as the HP logo appears to enter the Recovery Environment.Select "Troubleshoot" and then "Advanced options."
  • Choose "Startup Repair" to let Windows attempt to fix startup issues automatically.

5. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Re-seat Components: If you're comfortable doing so, you can open the laptop and re-seat the RAM modules and hard drive/SSD to ensure they are properly connected.
  • Listen for Beep Codes: If there are any beeps during startup, refer to the laptop’s manual or HP’s support website for beep code meanings.

6. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Power on the laptop and repeatedly press Esc until the Startup Menu appears.Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.Run a diagnostic test to check for hardware issues.

7. Try a System Restore or Reset

  • Access Recovery Options: If you can boot into the Recovery Environment (as described in Startup Repair), you can choose to perform a system restore or a factory reset from there.System Restore: This will revert the system to a previous state where it was working correctly.Factory Reset: This will restore the laptop to its original factory settings, erasing all data, so use it as a last resort.

8. Check for BIOS Issues

  • Enter BIOS Setup: Power on the laptop and press F10 (or Esc, then F10) to enter BIOS.Check Boot Order: Ensure the boot order is correct and that the hard drive or SSD is recognized.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
