Hi everyone.  I have been experiencing a black box which flashes onto the screen of my laptop about every10 minutes or so.  It looks like an error message box - but there is no text - plus it flashes so quickly I don't know the source.  I have not changed any programs - I did update BIOS about 3 weeks ago.  When I was checking the HP Support Assistant for updates, before downloading there was a box which asked to randomly send data to HP which I ticked yes for.  The black box is driving me insane as I use my laptop for work so when typing and the box flashes letters get missed out.  Plus when watching BBC iPlayer today the box kept flashing up and missed some of the programme.  I did try a system restore last night and it is still the same.  I am hoping someone can help.  I am based in the UK so a phonecall to US may be a little costly.  Also, I struggle with talking on phone due to my disability.  Asking the question on the forum was the recommended contact by HP.  Thanks

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand you want to get rid of the black box popping up on the screen at times,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you check if there's a recently installed program that could be causing the issue?

Have you attempted to perform a system restore?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

1. Click Start and search: msconfig > Select System Configuration;
2. Click Services on System Configuration > Click and select Hide all Microsoft services > Click Disable all;
3. Click Startup on System Configuration > Click Open Task Manager;
4. Select each startup item on Startup and click Disable > Close Task Manager;
5. Click OK on Startup tab of System Configuration > Restart PC.
By doing so, your computer will be able to work normally again and you’ll see that no CMD window pops up anymore.

If the issue persists, try the below steps:

SFC, known as System File Checker, can be used as a tool to scan all of important Windows files on your computer and repair them if necessary. Missing or corrupted system files such as DLL files may cause CMD continuously popping up etc errors in Windows. Let’s see how to run SFC to solve CMD.exe unusually show up error in your PC now:

1. Press Win + R > Type: cmd and click OK to bring up Command Prompt;
2. Type:sfc /scannow and hit Enter;
3. Then restart PC after the scan and check out whether the CMD.exe issue fixed or not.

Do get back to me as I have a few more tricks up my sleeve,

That said, If I have helped you resolve the issue,

feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon

followed by clicking on 'Accepted as Solution'

And Have a great day Ahead!

Thank you for your advice.  It did the trick!!  I disabled all programs at start up (except anti-virus) and no black box 🙂  At least now it can be a process of elimination to determine which proagram caused the black box.  I had not installed any recent programs and I had already tried a system restore.  The only thing recently changed was the update to BIOS.  I am just glad to be able to do some work now without the annoying black box.

Flashing command box keeps appearing on my screen every few minutes and it is really annoying. I have tried to follow the steps that you have previously recommended but neither are helping. Is there anything else i can do?

I tried both fixes you suggested. When I tried to do the "sfc/scannow" command, I got back an error message which says "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility."

Hi,

I have tried both of the solutions you suggested but the issue was not resolved for my laptop. Could you please share the next steps?

Hi,

I've tried the command prompt as well but it is still not resolved.

The following message is displayed after the scan.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Can you please guide me on what i should do further.

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?
  • Could you please share the error windows screenshot?

Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have 2 laptops - both were recently updated and one was completely crashed (now recovered) -- both have this black partial box come up blocking the screen and what I'm doing randomly -- or sometimes it is a white screen.   It doesn't seem like an error message screen and is blank about the size of this window for typing and certainly gets in the way.  Both laptops have both -- white and black -- sometimes they are not box shaped but run up the page also in an odd configuration.

Boy HP thanks so much for this wonderful update. So -- is your answer the same for both?
