Hi @Kailee3,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Experiencing a black screen issue on your HP Envy after entering your password can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem.
- Power cycle your computer: Shut down your HP Envy completely by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds until it turns off. Unplug the power adapter from the computer and remove the battery (if it's removable). After a few minutes, reconnect the power adapter (without the battery) and turn on the computer to see if the black screen issue is resolved.
- Check the display brightness: Sometimes the display brightness may be set to the lowest level, causing a black screen appearance. Press the brightness increase key (usually indicated by a sun icon) on your keyboard to adjust the display brightness and see if the screen becomes visible.
- Connect to an external monitor: Connect your HP Envy to an external monitor using the appropriate cable (e.g., HDMI, VGA) and see if the display appears on the external monitor. If the external monitor shows the screen properly, it indicates a potential issue with the laptop's display or graphics driver.
- Boot into Safe Mode: Restart your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key (or another key, depending on the model) during startup to access the Advanced Boot Options menu. From there, select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if your computer boots properly. If it does, it suggests that a third-party application or driver might be causing the black screen issue. You can then proceed to troubleshoot or uninstall recently installed software or drivers.
- Update graphics drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can sometimes cause display issues. Visit the HP support website (or the website of your graphics card manufacturer) to download and install the latest graphics drivers for your specific HP Envy model.
- Perform a system restore: If the black screen issue started after a recent software or system change, performing a system restore can help revert your computer back to a previous working state. Enter Safe Mode (as mentioned in Step 4) and select "System Restore" to choose a restore point before the problem occurred.
- Run startup repair: Use the Windows installation media (USB/DVD) to boot your HP Envy and choose the "Repair your computer" option. Select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Repair" to let Windows attempt to repair any startup-related issues that might be causing the black screen problem.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
