Hello,
Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.
The problem you see is probably caused due to the Windows update that has been applied
Perform SYSTEM RESTORE in an attempt to revert back
1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)
2. Power the computer back on.
2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu
3. Choose F11 for System Recovery options.
The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.
4. Please, perform "System Restore" first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:
>> https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4588-system-restore-windows-10-a.html
5. After restoring and if you are back in business:
- pause Windows Updates temporary to prevent it from re-downloading this "faulty" update >> http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-pause-windows-update-download-in-windows-10/
- block the latest updates using this tool >> http://www.thewindowsclub.com/block-unwanted-windows-updates-in-windows-10
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Provide your feedback/reply.

I have this too! but only on a BW066SA machine.
I shouldn't have to be blocking windows updates, which is a work around, and requires third party software.
This is a NEW machine.
You will probably find that the machine will boot up after 10 minutes or so, and work perfectly.... but just with a VERY SLOW login.
HP... you need to be talking to Microsoft to resolve this quickly.

I am glad you posted this question.
I just bought this laptop and after it did some update, I got the black screen with cursor on the next boot.
It is extremely frustrating as I had to do a recovery a few times to figure out what the issue was. I couldn't do a restore since it was updated as soon as I was doing the setup.
it looks like an issue with explorer.exe and if you open up task manager and run explorer.exe, it comes back to life (in some cases). In other cases after 20 mins, the screen comes back.
I have now totally disabled windows update using admistrative services in control panel. When can we expect a fix for this from either Microsoft or HP? This is not acceptable and I am very close to retuning this product as it has been nothing but a nightmare.

Another option reported working for several members is disabling App Readiness.
Wait 5-10 minutes for the desktop screen to appear
Right click the windows start button and click on "Run".
- in the Run box type services.msc and click ok
- look for App Readiness in the list
- double-click it, and you'll have the Properties dialogue
- change Manual to Disabled and then OK
- reboot
App Readiness gets applications ready for first logon or when adding new apps. It has been part of Windows since Windows 8 and has caused long startup problems sporadically on both.
If you have a problem installing a new app from the Windows Store you may have to re-enable it temporarily. You might also try re-enabling it after the next round of updates since it may resolve itself then.

Resolving the black screen issue caused by Windows 10 update
If you have previously disabled App Readiness
- Boot the PC
- Click Start and type Services
- Open desktop app Services and find App Readiness
- Open the service and set Startup type to Manual
- Click Apply and close the window
- Download and install HP Image Enhancement for System Logon - http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp81501-82000/sp81965.exe
- Reboot PC
If you have not disabled App Readiness
- Boot the PC
- Wait 15-20 minutes for the boot process to complete and desktop to load
- Once on desktop, Download and install HP Image Enhancement for System Logon - http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp81501-82000/sp81965.exe
- Reboot PC

Your advice for a reset will not work. MS updates are having compatability issues with HP computers. When you try to reset to an earlier point windows defender blocks the process. MS tech help was NO HELP. Apparently windows defender needs to be disabled, but according to a MS tech, it cannot be done. Is this accurate advice from MS? Probably not as the comapny is beyond screwed up.
