Hi @JaneIsk

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing this—it’s understandably alarming when your laptop goes completely dark after an update, especially when the power button doesn’t respond.

If your HP Pavilion laptop shows a black screen with no lights or response after an update, a full power drain and hardware reset may help restore functionality. If the system remains unresponsive, further steps can help isolate the issue.

Steps to Recover HP Pavilion Laptop from Black Screen with No Lights

1. Perform a Full Power Drain

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any connected peripherals (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Leave the laptop unplugged for 5 minutes, then reconnect the power adapter only.
  • Press the power button once and observe any signs of life (fan noise, LED blink, keyboard backlight).

2. Try a Key Combination Reset

  • With the laptop powered off:
    • Press and hold Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B for 10 seconds.
    • This shortcut attempts to reset the graphics driver and wake the display.
  • If the screen remains black, continue with the next step.

3. Connect to an External Monitor

  • Use HDMI or USB-C to connect your laptop to an external display.
  • Power on the laptop and check if the external screen shows any output.
  • If the external monitor works, the issue may be with the laptop’s internal display or graphics initialization.

4. Perform a BIOS Recovery (If Applicable)

  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release both keys and wait up to 60 seconds.
  • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen will appear.

5. Confirm Power Adapter Functionality

  • Use a compatible power adapter from another HP laptop if available.
  • Check for any LED indicators near the charging port—if none appear, the adapter or internal power circuit may be at fault.

You’ve already done everything right by identifying the issue and trying to restart—just a few more steps and you may see your system respond again.
