Hi @J152,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Based on your description, it sounds like your HP laptop boots to a black screen with a blinking cursor or a command prompt, instead of the Windows 11 desktop. This can happen due to several reasons, like Corrupted boot files or Display driver issues, Fast Startup glitches or System file corruption
Let’s try these steps to troubleshoot:
Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Unplug the charger and remove any external devices (USB, HDMI, etc.).
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Plug the charger back in and power it on.
Step 2: Boot into Safe Mode
If you see a blinking cursor or a black screen:
- Force shut down the laptop by holding the power button.
- Turn it on and immediately press F11 repeatedly until you see the Recovery screen.
- Go to Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
If it boots successfully, the issue is likely with a driver or startup program.
Step 3: Use HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run the System Tests > Fast Test or Extensive Test to check for hardware issues.
Step 4: Perform System Restore
If Safe Mode works:
- Press Win + R, type rstrui, and hit Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the issue started.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
