Hi HP Community,
I am at a lost with this blue screen of death on my HP Envy x360 laptop. It's a Microsoft problem for sure. On the blue screen there is a stop code: CRITICAL PROCESS DIED. I've tried every trouble shooting method online and nothing is working. It began yesterday morning and I'm still at it. Any suggestions that will turn things around for the better? Much appreciated and thank you!

@JM287, Thanks for the update — I can totally understand how frustrating this must be, especially when Safe Mode isn't kicking in properly. Let's try a few more steps to move forward.
Since you're getting the recovery screen, here’s what I recommend:
1. Use Startup Repair:
On the recovery screen, choose "Advanced Options" > "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced Options" > "Startup Repair".
Let Windows attempt to fix the boot issue automatically.
2. Try Booting into Safe Mode from Recovery:
Go to Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
After restart, press 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode.
3. If that fails — Use a Bootable USB:
Create a Windows 10/11 installation media from Microsoft’s site.
Boot your laptop using this USB > Select “Repair your computer” > Follow the same path to Safe Mode or System Restore.
A couple of quick questions to help us pinpoint the issue better:
🔹 Did this start after a recent update or new software installation?
🔹 Do you recall any power outages or forced shutdowns before the issue began?
🔹 Have you backed up your data recently?
Hang in there — we’ll get you through this. 💪
If our solution hit the spot, please click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left as that would make our day!
Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!

@JM287, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on HP Envy x360: CRITICAL PROCESS DIED!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Experiencing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) can be quite frustrating. Here are a few troubleshooting steps specific to your HP Envy x360 laptop to help resolve the "CRITICAL PROCESS DIED" stop code:
Restart in Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly during boot.
- Select Safe Mode when the menu appears. This will load only the essential drivers and should allow you to identify if a driver issue is causing the BSOD.
Run System File Checker (SFC):
- In Safe Mode, open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will scan and attempt to repair any corrupted system files.
Update Drivers:
- Go to the Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
- Check for any drivers that might have a yellow exclamation mark and update them.
- Alternatively, you can visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest drivers for your HP Envy x360.
Run DISM Tool:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Enter the command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. This will check for system corruption in the Windows image and repair it if necessary.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and see if any updates are available. Install all available updates.
Perform a System Restore:
- Boot into Safe Mode.
- Type rstrui in the Run dialog (Win + R) to open the System Restore utility.
- Follow the prompts to restore your system to a point before the issue began.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for that information. I tried to go into safe mode by pressing f8, but it didn’t work. It goes to recovery screen and it says your PC couldn’t start properly. It gives me four options. One is press Enter to try again. Press F1 to enter a recovery environment. Press F8 for start up settings. Press escape for EFI firmware settings. I’ve tried everyone of those and nothing seems to work.
