HP convertible x360

When I turn the laptop on the black screen says, “boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk.”

is the laptop useless now, is it more expensive to repair than to buy another one?

Hello @SK60

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Is the laptop under active warranty ?

No, it is not useless now. Your computer consists of 2 things basically -> hardware and software. It is a synergy between them but if we talk about the device itself, most important and most expensive is the hardware. Your hardware looks ok based on the message.

Reason/Root cause >> You get this message because either of these:

-  Computer's BIOS is not configured correctly and it tries to boot from a device (not standard HDD) that has no bootable stuff on it (e.g. empty USB pen drive)

-  there is no HDD/SSD/disk drive/storage drive present in the PC

-  HDD/SSD is present but corrupted (or some connector is not working)

-  Operating system (e.g. Windows) is totally corrupt/unbootable

POSSIBLE FIX FOR YOUR ISSUE >> You can review the official HP article and try the steps > http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443463

It's just a matter of few configurations or Windows reinstallation. It can be done for free by you if you are willing to try the steps from the article.

Hello, thanks for the info. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it work, and tried to order the recovery USB drives, but HP didn’t have them available.

any suggestions for next steps?

Hi @SK60

Thank you for your update.

Ordering a recovery USB device is just one of doing it. There are also some other methods.

  • You may be able to create your own USB recovery media to use to reinstall Windows. In order to provide you with specific tailored advice, please let me know what your Windows version is - e.g Windows 7, 8 or 10 ?

Hello I have Windows 10 on it

Thank you for your update. Apologies for my delay.

You may create your own USB media (and then use it) using one of these two methods:

  • (1) HP method - HP Cloud recovery - will restore Windows, HP drivers and some HP preinstalled apps/settings. Works for most models. Currently, the tool supports consumer PCs manufactured in 2016 and later. Earlier computers are being added on an ongoing basis. You may read more or watch demo here >> https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06162205

  • (2) Microsoft method - most popular - will restore Windows by performing clean "vanilla" installation and may eventually reinstall drivers through Windows update method or manually. Works for all model. Instructions how to do it can be read/watched in the PDF file attached below

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes
