Hi @Tgarrison,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your laptop is having trouble detecting the operating system on your hard disk. This could be due to several reasons, such as a faulty hard drive, corrupted operating system files, or incorrect BIOS settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
- Check BIOS Settings: Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS (usually by pressing F2, F10, or Del key during startup). Ensure that the hard drive is detected in the BIOS settings. If it's not, there might be a hardware issue with the hard drive or its connection.
- Re-seat the Hard Drive: If you're comfortable with hardware, you can try re-seating the hard drive. Turn off your laptop, remove the battery (if possible), and then locate the hard drive. Remove it carefully, then re-insert it firmly. Restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.
- Boot from Recovery Media: If your laptop came with a recovery CD/DVD or USB drive, insert it and try booting from it to repair or reinstall the operating system.
- Check Hard Drive Health: If you have access to another computer, you can remove the hard drive from your laptop and connect it externally using a SATA to USB adapter. Then, you can run diagnostic tools like CHKDSK (for Windows) or Disk Utility (for macOS) to check for disk errors and bad sectors.
- Replace the Hard Drive: If none of the above steps work and your hard drive is confirmed to be faulty, you may need to replace it with a new one. Make sure to back up any important data if possible before doing so.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
