Hi,
Are you saying that you have upgraded the kernel from other sources than the official Ubuntu repositories? The LTS distros have usually older kernel than the rolling ones so they won't offer the latest kernels in the repos. If you upgrade the kernel yourself then you have to make sure that Grub is also updated which is done automatically when you install a kernel from the repos. Dv6-6000 series should be either older AMD or the 2nd Intel gen Sandy Bridge which doesn't support UEFI. Repairing the master boot record/MBR could be a good idea then. It has happened to me once or twice after a kernel/grub update.

Since the system boots into the Grub menu the integrated vga should be fine. It's obviously hard drive/MBR related. The hard drive can work or you can mount the partitions but the MBR could still be damaged.
