Hi @Compaqgirl,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're getting a "Missing Bootmgr" error on your HP laptop running Windows 7, it means that the Boot Manager (Bootmgr) is either missing or corrupted, preventing your system from booting into Windows. Here’s how you can try to fix this issue.
Check Boot Order in BIOS
- Restart your laptop.
- Immediately press the Esc, F10, or F12 key (depending on your model) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
- Ensure that your hard drive is set as the primary boot device.
Use a Windows 7 Installation Disc or USB
- Insert your Windows 7 installation disc or a bootable USB.
- Restart the laptop and boot from the disc/USB.
- Press any key when prompted to boot from CD/DVD or USB.
Repair Your Computer
- Select your language preferences and click Next.
- Click on Repair your computer at the bottom left of the screen.
- Select the operating system you want to repair and click Next.
- Choose Startup Repair. This tool will attempt to fix any problems preventing Windows from starting.
Manually Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD)
If Startup Repair doesn't work, you can manually rebuild the BCD.
Boot from the Windows 7 installation media as above.
When you reach the System Recovery Options, choose Command Prompt.
Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
If the RebuildBcd command finds a Windows installation, it will ask if you want to add it to the boot list. Type Yes.

Check Disk for Errors
In the Command Prompt, you can also check your disk for errors using:
chkdsk C: /f /r
Replace C: with the correct drive letter if your Windows partition is on another drive.
System Restore (Optional)
- If the above steps don’t work, you might consider performing a System Restore to revert your laptop to an earlier point when it was working.
Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)
- If none of the above steps work, you may need to reinstall Windows 7. Make sure to back up any important data if possible before proceeding with a reinstall.
These steps should help you recover your laptop and get it booting into Windows 7 again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
