This can be any of three issues -- of increasing severity:

1) Boot records -- these could have been corrupted or overwritten, thus your PC can not find the files it needs to know that Windows is on the drive. This can be corrected using A) below.

2) OS corrupted or missing -- the boot records could be intact but critical OS files have been corrupted or removed. This is more serious and implies serious hard drive damage. This requires doing the steps in B) below to rewrite a copy of the OS over the old files.

3) The filesystem is general is corrupted -- this implies serious hard drive damage or failed drive. This means that not only has the OS been damaged, but your apps and personal files have most likely been damaged as well. You need to do the steps in B) to check the drive, but if it has failed, then you're looking at replacing the drive and ordering HP Recovery Media to restore the PC to working condition. See C) below.

---------- A ---------- Rebuilding boot records
You will need to create Boot Media using a working PC -- as there is no way to repair this on your current PC.

Macrium Reflect is a free tool that can be used to image and restore PCs, but it also has an option to create Rescue Media (in disk or USB form) that can then be used to Repair your PC.

It is available from here: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

What I recommend is the following:
a) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
b) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD
c) Boot your PC from the MR media and select the option to repair the Windows Boot

---------- B ---------- Reloading the OS
What MIGHT work is something known as a repair-install. This is the least destructive of all the Windows recovery functions and rewrites the Windows system files, including the drivers, leaving your data, settings, and applications intact.

To do this, you will need to use the link to download Win10 installation media and either burn a DVD or create a USB stick: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10

Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit). Make sure you select the same version as needed for your PC. If you do not, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!

Once you have that media, follow the instructions in the link: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

---------- C ---------- Ordering HP Recovery Media
This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.

You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded.

You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!

If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, another site you can check is: http://www.computersurgeons.com/

Be sure to read through the material in the linked thread BEFORE you attempt the recovery: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00707939

When you get the media, if it is a USB stick, insert it into your PC, pressing F9 to get a Boot menu, then select the External USB Hard Drive to boot from it.
