Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Please help. I am so frustrated. I have had this laptop less than a week and it is running so slow that I would rather use my phone. I have 30 days to return it and if something doesn't change that is my plan.  EVERYTHING lags...online and offline. That circle of dots is constantly visible. I get so frustrated I just "x" out of whatever program I am trying to access.  I chose this computer , because of it's hefty speed, RAM , Quad core, improved graphics card , which was great for the price range and now it doesn't even run an 8 bit game like Minecraft without serious lag. Thank you so much for any help in advance.

Hello ekcmama,

I can understand your frustration, and i offer my help to get the issue resolved ekcmama.   I thank you as well for giving me the chance to help you.

Please turn the computer off. As you press the power button, immediately keep tapping F2 key.. (Tap, Tap, Tap). This should show the hardware diagnostic screen with multiple options.

Choose component test , then harddisk and then choose extensive test.  This test will take a while (about an hour).  If it fails, it will show the failure id which you may note.

So, hard disk failure could be the reason of your computer going slow.  If you contact hp support @1-800-474-6836 they will give you the options to replace/repair your computer.

Thank you once again for choosing HP .

Regards,

This may apply to others with the same problem or it may not. I just bought a new laptop at Best Buy and had the same issues immediately after I took it out of the box. Super slow...online or not...and very unresponsive to the simplest of tasks.

I carried it back the next day and consulted with a member of the Geek Squad. He suggested that I go home and make every effort to download ANY/ALL updates that may be needed. According to him, Microsoft was the reason that this issue was occuring. They had launched their software for use with the new HP computers (and I guess others as well), but there were MANY glitches and issues that had to be dealt with....Thus, the need for the MANY (and there are MANY!!!) updates that needed to be made for the machine to achieve its full level of productivity. So, I went home and  hardwired into my router to make sure that I was getting the best possible connection and began to search and install ALL the downloads that were identified.

Long story short...It took 18 hours for the last of the updates to load and for the final restart to occur. But, in spite of my scepticism, the Geed Squad tech was correct. It's like what I expected when it came out of the box...super fast and totally functional on all tasks.

What makes NO SENSE to me...why offer a product for sale that comes out of the box needing this much technical assistance to function correctly??? Also, why did the salesman at Best Buy not inform me that this was something that I needed to do??? Obviously this was something that had occured before, otherwise, how did the Geek Squad tech know what a possible fix was? I'm not a computer expert...but I'm not totally without knowledge about how they work. I arried out the startup/setup procedures just like I was instructed to do. At NO TIME was I told that there were so MANY updates that needed to be dealt with.

I'm thankful for the young man who gave me the tutorial on what to do and I'm grateful for the patience he showed when I had so many questions and needed instructions repeated. It's just a shame that a new computer, out of the box, required a second trip to the store and 18 hours of technical assistance to run correctly.

HP...help all of your loyal customers out here. DON'T SELL PRODUCTS THAT COME OUT OF THE BOX NEEDING FIXES TO WORK CORRECTLY! Not what I paid for...you know?
